Chapter Seven

“Son, what’s happening? Are you okay?” a female voice demanded.

“Ma, I told you, he probably just got royally laid!” a younger voice interrupted.

“Kyra! You’re there too?” Carrick burst out.

“And me, Aoife,” came another.

Carrick dropped his head into his free hand and groaned.

“What’s wrong, son?” asked his mother.

“Oona,” Carrick mouthed to Christa.

“Who’s there with you?” Oona’s voice sharpened.

Carrick mouthed, “Sorry,” before saying, “She’s called Christabel.” He sighed at the chorus of exclamations and questions this provoked.

“Let me dial Neave in,” Kyra said.

“Don’t—” Carrick gave in. “Ma, actually you could help.” He ignored her, “I knew it!” “What would you say if I told you Christa just mended my shoulder using nothing but energy?”

“That she’s a psychic healer, using her own empathic energy,” came the prompt answer. Aoife, Christ thought.

“And just demonstrated psychokinesis? And can use telepathic probes?”

A snort came down the line. “That you’d better not ever mess her about if you value your man bits, bro!”

“You mind your ways, Neave. He’s been brought up better than that,” Oona shouted. “But what’s the problem?”

“I can’t use it! Or control it. Or…” Christ shrugged.

“Move away from her, Carrick. Let me get a sense of her,” his mother ordered. Carrick, rolling his eyes, did as asked.

“Should we wake up Granny?” someone asked, to a chorus of “No,” and, “God, no.”

There was a silence. Christa sat calmly, buffeted by waves of warmth and concern.

“I can’t quite see,” Oona said at last. “Son—”

“I’m not doing anything!” he called from a distance.

“How do you channel?” asked Oona, and Christa explained the best she could about the exercises she did, the electromagnetic pulses used, or how different sound frequencies played into the right and left ears so the mind created a new frequency, trying to make sense of the two, her headaches, nosebleeds…

“It’s not that you’re blocked, exactly.” Oona sought for words. “More like emptied out. Harvested from. You access or channel a whole heap of psi energy, then it’s removed from you and the conduit tamped. It can’t be good. I’d have to see you in person to get the details. Maire, get on the computer and look up flights. We can—”

“No! Please no!” Carrick broke in. “You’ve helped enough. Really. That’s it.”

“I have a question.” This voice was younger. Maire? Christa wondered. “If this Christa is all shut down, like, how did she break through and channel enough energy for healing? She must have had one hell of a release.”

“Well, when she and Carrick f—”

“Bye!” Carrick disconnected and sat again, head on the table and both arms wrapped over it. He looked up when Christa dissolved into laughter.

“I can see why you block,” she managed, between giggles, wiping her eyes. “Do you think they’re on their way to the airport?”

“Don’t even…” He shook his head. “Come here.”

Christa sat in his lap again. She…liked it. What she didn’t like was feeling used. And abused. Her sensing sessions had left her weak and out of it, and now she knew why. She snuggled into Carrick’s embrace, feeling warm and cherished.
